Bill Russell Can Save You Money!

They sure don’t make television commercials like they used to, eh?
Check out this incredible 1973 Bell Systems ad of former Celtics great Bill Russell explaining how easy it is to save 50% on long distance. (”Don’t pass off to the operator, she can’t save you money!)
Man, there are so many great things to love about this commercial — the script, his kick-ass tie, the fact that there’s a basketball net hanging in his library — but my favorite, by far, has to be the euphoric grunt Russell unleashes at the end.
“Aaaaaahaigh!!!”
Sort of sounds like Big Boss from C.O.P.S., no?

Holy nostalgia Batman. I have a sudden urge to run home, put on footy PJ’s and eat half a box of Cheerios out of a saucepan with a wooden spoon.

You captured the enunciation to perfection. Impressive!
Yeah, props to Nora for suggesting that extra ‘h’. Really adds another layer to it, doesn’t it?
No prob. I’m all about details ;).
Jesus, there weren’t any actual _words_ in that ad.
I’d hate to know what he’s doing when he makes that sound at night.
This is a gem … [Link]
The noise he makes at the end sounds like Howard Dean did at that rally in 2004
