Wanted: Atlanta’s Air Force Video

Last night, between catching up on Lost Season 2 episodes, I stumbled upon a NBA special featuring highlights and interviews of the three latest Hall of Fame inductees: Charles Barkley, Joe Dumars, and Dominique Wilkins.

During ‘Nique’s awesome highlight reel, they showed a quick clip from a music video the ‘86-87 Atlanta Hawks team made called, Atlanta’s Air Force. Like all professional sport teams’ music videos (see: Bears, Chicago and Flames, Calgary) it looked absolutely brilliant!

So like any good NBA blogger would, I immediately got my ass to YouTube and typed in “Atlanta’s Air Force”. Nothing. What? Travesty! So I decided to do some more research — um, type it into Google. Here’s what I found:

And that’s it. I couldn’t find the actual music video anywhere. (Single tear.)

So, this is where I turn to you, loyal TBJ reader. If anyone has this music video or knows where one can find it, please, let me know. Hell, I’ll even award a little prize or a free TBJ post to the first person who can help us get the entire “Atlanta’s Air Force” music video up on the Internet, where it so rightfully belongs.

Here are some pics I snapped off the TV for inspiration:

Good luck brethren … and be safe.

As probably the biggest Dominique Wilkins fan on the planet, I remember this video. I also looked around and couldn’t find it anywhere.

If you can believe it, there is an even better “Nique” video that aired on TBS in 1985. It was a plea from a local Atlanta rap group/band for Dominique to make his first All Star appearance.

How do I know this? Growing up, I put together about twelve VHS tapes of Dominique Wilkins. This includes the dunk contests and the shoot out with Bird. Unfortunately, they’re all in a box in a garage at my mom’s house.

    What a waste.

I have a copy on DVD for posterity.

It use to be shown all the time during Hawks vs Celtics games.

I would upload it but I prefer to think I have the only surviving copy in existence….sorry.

I don’t know about everyone else, but seeing ‘Nique channel his inner Stevie Wonder, with Jon Koncak standing right behind him…that made my morning. If it wasn’t Sunday, it would’ve made my week.

Skeets, this is the greatest thing I’ve seen in weeks. Growing up in Atlanta as a Hawks season ticket holder back then ($205 for a $5 ticket for the entire season, which I paid for myself — I was 12), I not only remember the song and video, but I actually owned the 45 of the single. The Hawks did a whole promotional theme that season based on this ideal, with sepia-toned posters of Fratello and Nique and Kevin Willis in WWII flight gear. It was really pretty brilliant all the way around.

I’ve looked on YouTube for that video before myself, maybe a year ago. But this has me inspired. I’m making calls tomorrow to my people in the Hawks front office and let’s see if we can make this happen and uncover the lost video.

[…] (Note: My weekend plea for Atlanta’s Air Force music video to find rotation on the triple-dub has finally grown some wings. Yeah, apparently Lang’s got connections and he’s damn well going to use ‘em. Stay tuned.) By J.E. Skeets at 12:29 pm on 13/09/2006 — Filed under: Raptors, Andrea Bargnani […]

[…] This all started a few weeks ago with a post by J.E. Skeets over at The Basketball Jones. Skeets was watching Raptors TV when they showed the Atlanta Hawks team video from back in 1986. The song is called “Nothing Can Stop Us,” and as a kid in Atlanta back in the day, it was dope. Looking at it now, it’s obviously highly derivative of Huey Lewis and the News, but back then, who knew? […]
