La Pelota Du Jour
Mr. Henry Abbott over at TrueHoop wrote a guest spot for ESPN discussing the controversy over the new synthetic ball to be used this year in the L.
Henry doesn’t get a lot of time to put together lengthy pieces, so when he does, it’s worth the time to take a look.
He also mentions our own J.E. Skeets’ experience with the new ball when he visited the NBA Store way back in June. You may recall Skeets was in New York attending the NBA draft doing Skeets-type things like seeing how he measured up against Rebecca Lobo. Then again, you may not.
Thanks to Henry for the TBJ shout out.

Phoenix [-4] over LA LAKERS
No Kobe, no good. Bryant will play this evening but he didn’t see the floor in the preseason. As #8, er…. #24 goes, so do the Lakers, and he’ll have plenty of rust to shed. Los Angeles has won 13 of its last 14 season openers and Phoenix has lost six of seven but it doesn’t matter here. 19-year-old Andrew Bynum starting at center? Please!
Book it!

Don’t look now, but we’re minus 10 hours and counting until the Bulls-Heat start the 2006-07 NBA season / I yell expletives at Antoine fucking Walker.
As you can probably imagine, I’m pretty excited to watch some goddamn basketball again. (So is Dear Leader, Kim Jong Il I hear.)
Anyway, this is just a reminder that we’re not kidding about this whole “podcasting 5 times a week” thingamajig.* I mean, yes, it’s pretty fucking stupid, and yes, we’ll probably kill each other on air by week three, but no, it’s not a lie. This is definitely for real.
Yup, starting tomorrow at the ass-crack of dawn — aka 5-ish — Tas, JD, and I will be recording our first of many daily morning shows — tentatively called ‘The Fix’. (Anyone got something better? We’re all ears…)
If things go smoothly, you can probably expect to see and hear a ‘cast on here (and in iTunes for our loyal subscribers) by 7, 7:15am EST. (Note: Things will not go smoothly. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s impossible for things to go smoothly at that time in the morning. Yes, I’m telling you now, we will be sluggish for the first couple of shows. Please bear with us.)
And now to the real purpose of the post… BEGGING!
As I’ve said before, we need some crazy listener participation for this show to have any chance at succeeding. Seriously, if I can wipe the gook from my eyes tomorrow morning to the sight of three or four solid e-mails/phone calls/Odeo messages… well damn, I think it’ll really kick start this endeavor, OK?
So yeah, please send The Basketball Jones podcast your thoughts, questions, concerns, and/or suggestions. Feel free to be as serious, or as stupid as you want. Everything is open game. Don’t be shy.
OK, I’m tired of explaining things. Let’s just do this shit and see what happens, eh? Enjoy the tip.
* I can’t believe “thingamajig” is an actual word. Why didn’t I know about this? I am absolutely flabbygastedballooeyd by this revelation…

OK, explanation time. Pull up an ottoman…
In case you hadn’t noticed, yes, we have a brand new looking website. Why? Well, we just figured, shit, it’s the start of a new NBA season; it’s the start of a new TBJ Podcast season … why the fuck not?
And while we anticipated some TBJ reader backlash — “fix this fucking design cockup, jackasses” — we have to admit, we’ve been a little surprised by the overall “thumbs down” reaction its received.
Truth is, this blog is in the process of becoming much more than a blog — um, five podcasts a week, people — so we decided it was time for a much more professional look. Say what you will about the design — it’s too white, it’s too bright, the alignment is weird — it definitely looks more professional than that ugly, orange hack we had. You feel us?
With that said, there were a few other reasons for the change…
First off, we wanted to highlight the podcast and podcast interaction buttons a lot more. (Hence the left side sidebar.) In order for the daily show to succeed we need to a) increase our podcast subscription numbers, and b) increase the listeners interaction/participation. We figured making the buttons a little more prominent might help.
Secondly, we needed more space to post bad. Seriously, the old site column was so fucking small we could barely fit a YouTube video on it. Here, we can stretch out my legs and ramble on about Kurt Thomas and his lazy-eye until we get carpal tunnel. Seems like a win-win situation, no?
Finally, we just found about this crazy little thing called money and decided we might try to make some of it. Yeah, we’ve got server costs, and Skype costs, and blah-blah-blah … the ads are there and more are probably coming. We don’t think they hurt the site, but if they do, let us know, and we will crush them like a bug after we click on them a whole bunch to drive up our revenue.
(Quick note: If you ever do feel like clicking on an ad, may I suggest the GoogleAds, sir? It has an excellent aroma and is quite full-bodied. Great taste.)
So yeah, that’s sort of our 7am explanation for the new look. Honestly, we really, really, really — no, why don’t you understand? Really — appreciate your feedback and thoughts so please keep ‘em coming — either by comment or e-mail.
Hell, bitch about it enough and we might even fix the layout. (Sorry Hebrew brothers.)
OK, that’s it, croissant time…

The NBA Blog Previews are finished, and here’s a ridiculously huge link-dump to prove it. (Sorry, this will probably clog your browser.)
But before you get down and dirty, we should thank all the bloggers who penned a preview, Ron from Hornets247.com for compiling this handy HTML code, and Jeff from CelticsBlog.com for organizing this incredibly daunting task. (Trust me, I practically blackout just trying to get 5 bloggers organized for a podcast. This is a lot of work.)
Anyway, great job, NBA Blogosphere. Well done. Enjoy…

TBJ on AOL Sports Bloggers Live
With the season tip just 32 hours away; I finally made my triumphant return to the Sports Bloggers Live’s Gentner SPH-5 phone-in system!
“Three cheers for teleconferencing technology! Hip-hip…”
SBL co-hosts Jamie Mottram and Brad Parker threw me some difficult questions, but don’t worry, I think I did a pretty good job of pretending I didn’t hear them.
“Huh? Sorry? I can’t… goddamn this shitty teleconferencing technology!”
Anyway, yeah… if you want to hear me ramble on about A.C. Green’s blue-balls, the Knicks new UPS-sponsored shorts, and why Robert Swift’s body has rejected his new look… have a listen.

The offseason is bland. It’s time for some spice.
The Basketball Jones — Episode 036
The NBA is back! In this 2006-2007 season preview episode, Skeets and I forsee the division champions, point out some breakout players/major story lines, and predict some award winners. (MVP, ROY, MIP, etc…)
We also explain this podcasting extravaganza that we’re about to kill ourselves doing.
Oh, all that, and plenty of DP action.

(UPDATE: The post is coming, but a new TBJ podcast is up on the left … I’ll be talking NBA superlatives — what does that even mean? — with the SBL crew in about 30 minutes … explanations still coming … and oh, the season tips tomorrow! Fuck yeah!)
