The Basketball Jones ‘NBA Finals Preview Show’ — Episode 176 (.mp3)

On today’s show, Tas and I are joined by Sports Illustrated’s Kelly Dwyer to breakdown the Cleveland-San Antonio NBA Finals. Can the Cavs make this a series or are they just happy to be there? How will Popovich and his Spurs try to contain Le-Bro? What about those two regular season games — do they mean anything? So many questions, so little Supertramp!

Oh, all that, and we pick our favorite Finals moments, argue whether the Spurs are a dynasty, hear some sexy-ass blogger predictions, and much, much more…

[…] Did you swear off reading any NBA Finals previews? That’s fine … but what about listening to previews? Tas Melas, J.E. Skeets and SI.com’s Kelly Dwyer break down the Cavs-Spurs matchup on (the always outstanding) The Basketball Jones podcast. […]

Class move by KD giving you guys respect for another banger of a season by The Jones.

And aside from my creepiness, the blogger v-mail medley was pretty awesome.

I’m now prepared for a small dose of championship basketball.

  3. becky at 11:05 am on 06.07.2007

I am, how you say? long-winded.
Thanks for letting me play. :)

    And it’s “babgina.”

You know how I know you’re gay? I’ve had “Heat of the Moment” in my head for the past 3 hours because of you.

  4. J.E. Skeets at 11:10 am on 06.07.2007

Yeah, I’ll call Miss Cleo and tell her there’s nothing left to predict…

Thanks for the call, Becky. Greatly appreciated.

  5. tarheels28 at 12:35 pm on 06.07.2007

Great show guys, thanks for all the hard work.

    Spurs in 5.

  6. Matt D at 12:48 pm on 06.07.2007

Boobie is now called Babgina because the foreplay is over… bring on the Finals!

    Great show.

  7. benjammin' at 1:02 pm on 06.07.2007

I likes Babgina. Its sounds like a tasty Indian food. I’ll have a nice plate of Babgina.

I still hate Lee bro. It sounds like a Zellers brand shoe. Lebron is not a Zellers brand anything.

Great show. Do more from the studio.

  8. Tas Melas at 1:31 pm on 06.07.2007

Becky, I wasn’t mocking your “babgina” term. I actually knew a man who’s name was Peter Peter Bagina. We kind of made fun of him.

And Matt D, line of the Finals!!!

  9. J.E. Skeets at 1:42 pm on 06.07.2007

Great show. Do more from the studio.

    Start calling Sirius/XM then …

  10. Tas Melas at 2:24 pm on 06.07.2007

    Let the petition begin!!!

If the prediction was that someone will receive the nickname Babgina (or Baginba), I nominate Tony Parker. Unless we assume that Eva already gave him this name, in which case it goes to Bruce “Can’t Spell Baginba Without B.B.” Bowen.

  12. Alan at 2:43 pm on 06.07.2007

how are the spurs not a dynasty? they have been the team to beat every year for the past decade in the dominant Western Conference

  13. J.E. Skeets at 2:49 pm on 06.07.2007

Alan: Have you listened to the show yet? I explain why …

  14. Maxwell Demon at 3:01 pm on 06.07.2007

Were the 00-02 Lakers a dynasty? A threepeat is a pretty strong argument, but is 3 years dynastic enough? Boobie.

  15. Alan at 3:33 pm on 06.07.2007

Yes i did, great show. but the spurs have been one of the top 4 teams almost every single year. Some years they have won it all, some years they didn’t. But with their continued high quality play every single year, there is no other word that does them justice than dynasty.

  16. Matt D at 3:37 pm on 06.07.2007

During these moments, I like to turn to the good book for guidance …

  17. J.E. Skeets at 3:40 pm on 06.07.2007

Were the 00-02 Lakers a dynasty?

Tough question. I’ll say, yes. Three in a row is ridiculously rare. Back-to-back? Not so much.

And I said this to Melas off-air, but the Spurs FRONT OFFICE is the real dynasty there …

  18. becky at 4:04 pm on 06.07.2007

Tas- one man, 2 Peters? sick one.

p.s. Geraldo and I attended the same law school. this does nothing to add to my awesomeness. I just thought I’d throw it out there.

  19. Semprini at 8:44 pm on 06.07.2007

Great ‘cast today fellas. I gotta say “Le-Bro” sounds better as a nickname every time I hear it.

  20. KD at 4:58 am on 06.08.2007

I do have to thank JD for the Pumpkins intro, and especially “Muzzle.” I listened to next-to zero 90s bands after 1995 or so, but that song spoke to my condition as a pasty, Irish, Queen-loving, basketball freak from Chicago with bad teeth — Corgan and I have quite a bit in common. Except for the fact that he can dunk, and I don’t write bad poetry.

I also need an air conditioner for my bedroom, because I don’t think I’ve slept more than four hours in a night since April 17th.

  21. Chaunceford Billups at 2:27 pm on 06.08.2007

    Kelly Dwyer is a man?

  22. J.E. Skeets at 2:47 pm on 06.08.2007

    Kelly Dwyer is THE man.

  23. Carrousel Yacht at 12:06 am on 06.12.2007

Great segment, nice work. And yes, the Spurs are a dynasty, unfortunately. I liked the NBA better when the East dominated!
