Ep. 183: After The Party …

There was no hotel lobby, but there was Jamaal Magloire.
The Basketball Jones Podcast — Episode 183 (.mp3)
On today’s show, Skeets and I discuss: if the Magic signing Rashard Lewis to all those dollars makes sense; the not-so-promising situations in Charlotte and Milwaukee; if anyone should give a crap about the NBA Summer League; the newest Laker, Derek Fisher; and much, much, more …
Oh, all that, and All-Star Jamaal in a Montreal lobby? Yes, it’s true. Some dreams do come true.

Thanks for the daps, wet bandits.
What I meant to say was: “MattO, good friend, better tour guide”.
Did you guys see Miss Gossip talking to Greg Oden? She mentions your podcast.

FREE THE STACHE.
Its sad when you have to reference your own Home Alone quotes
I thought you were the Sticky Bandits?
So apparently now there’s something called a “MILILF” …
Discovered your site through that Ogden clip.
Thank god! If I had to listen to another b-ball podcast with Chad Ford throwing softballs at GM’s, I was going to chuck my mp3 player out the window.
Tell us where you went drinking in the 514? Did you go discovering the city or with one of the hassidic anglos who couldnt find this city with a map in hand and only know Crescent street (which is about the length of two soccer fields) bars?
-The Plateau is the region around Mt.Royal boulevard which starts west of the Big O all the way to the foot of the mountain. If you werent anywhere near this street at least once, then you havent visited Montreal. Its been hip for almost two decades which means that most hip bars are moving because the rents have gone insane from all the yuppies buying condos.
Still, if youre trolling for local poon…its a must.
-St.Denis from the Plateau all the way down to de Maisonneuve (where it becomes know as the Latin Quarter) probably has more bars, cafes, brewpubs and terrace than the rest of the city.
-St.Laurent is another very long boulevard, a little euro in flavor.
-Old Montreal has less clubs but more restaurants, cafes and bars, is close to the old port and a 5min cab ride to the casino. If youre under 30 and single, you can skip it.
Montreal is a great city (I moved there from BC 5 years ago) but too many people I know come from TO and see a small segregated parts of the city.
Rob
Miss Gossip is a wonderful person.
Cleveland should have tweaked Megan Fox’s nipples.
Hassidic anglo? Sounds about right.

Yeah, good take on the Rashard deal, Tas.
Guys, Wow - how is it possible for you guys to be so wrong?
Tas, in your comments about Rashard Lewis you said, “you have two superstars now..” and “you have two studs…” Giving Rashard $120+ doesn’t turn him into a stud or a superstar. These words have never been used when describing him. EVER. He’s the softest player in the NBA. Does not play defense and hates contact (won’t go inside). When it came to making a clutch shot - he looks to pass. Yes he can hit threes. AND THATS IT. They could have gone after Jason Kapono or Mo Pete for less than half the price and gotten the same player. Give those guys the same # of touches, and the numbers would be similar.
In comparing him to Gerald Wallace, you said Wallace only scored 18ppg because he was on a bad team - how is that different from Rashard’s situation? They couldn’t win 35 games, and HE WASN”T THE BEST PLAYER ON THE TEAM! He never wanted to be.
Seriously! the most idiotic statements I’ve ever heard anyone say about Rashard? A superstar? He’s been in the league for NINE YEARS?! WHAT HAS HE DONE?!!!
And what about the Magic fans? They’ve been crying for the last five years because they’ve been crippled with Grant Hill’s contract, and just when they get out from under this, management goes and does THIS?
Did you and the Magic GM all sit and watch Rashard Lewis highlights on utube? Maybe there was some popcorn? I hope it was delicious. Is it that Seattle was just so bad that you’ve never actually watched him play a game? Never watched him NOT play defense? This is the only reason I can come up with for your comments.
I like the signing of Darko for the grizz, I think he’ll be able to tap into this potential that we keep hearing about. But…you say he’s an ‘outside player’ that will complement the inside game of Pau Gasol. Where are you getting this information? He was billed as an outside player coming into the league, but that is not what he has been for the last 3 years - in fact, his potential has been in his passing and shot from the post. He’s a good passer from the high post and can occasionally hit the set shot from the top of the key, but that doesn’t make him an outside player any more than it does Tim Duncan….start watching Darko and quit summarizing his game from a press release from 4 years ago.
Justin
And another thing or two…
I should start by saying I really do like the podcast. You guys are funny, entertaining, give a very fresh perspective, and the music and the voice intro’s all give a very professional feel to it. You do a really great job!
But as long as I dissed the Rashard comments, I’m gonna keep rolling:
Your thoughts on the Bobcats. Although I’m not totally sold on Richardson, so I only mildly disagree with you. But they are too young, needed a veteran leader and go to scorer a lot more than they needed another kid who is three years away. I agree Richardson is a gamble because he has seemed injury prone, but otherwise fits what they’re trying to do. So I think it’s a gamble worth taking. He’s a go to scorer (look at his ‘05-’06 season), he has a good handle, plays D, and as far as team D, he and Wallace on the wings, Okafor blocking shots - I like what they’re doing.
As for the Bulls signing Nocioni - yeah Tas, this ones just for you. I totally disagree with you. Specifically regarding Nocioni, he got a little more than midlevel, and there a plenty of players in the league making between $5-$10 million. So its a contract that can easily be moved when the time comes. He was the Bulls sixth man last year when healthy, and is the only forward on the team that is a 3 point threat, so he does add a change of pace from Deng and Thomas. You’re right that his minutes will go down. But it’s a tradeable contract, he has trade value, there’s nothing wrong with having a deep team.
And the Bulls just signed Joe Smith to only a TWO year deal!? They get a role playing veteran who gives them some post scoring, and still is a small enough commitment to allow the kids to develop. As for the team improving its roster,
they kept everyone from last year’s 49 win team except for three guys. They replaced PJ Brown, Malik Allen and Sweetney with Joe Smith, Joakim Noah, and Aaron Grey. Every one of those is an upgrade.
The Bulls and Raptors are the future of the East for the next ten years. Both teams have a young core, both mix in role playing vets, and both teams win.
Finally, just to get on Skeets case about Cleveland - No wait - I totally agree with you! You’re right, AND you’re funny! too bad Tas can’t be more like Skeets.
[…] Watching the Magic this year, all I kept thinking was they need someone to score from the outside. Grant Hill couldn’t do it, but Lewis can. Of course, I understand the thinking that giving all these ducats to a guy who isn’t a build-your-team-around kind of player sort of cripples your growth towards a championship. Now, I assume that Otis Smith didn’t bid against himself. I know I’m being naive here, this ass backwards type of move has happened before. ESPN’s Chad Ford points out (Insider) that Smith likely did just that, but I still can’t fathom how someone put in the position of GM can possibly do that (it’s time for a fantasy GM reality show - I’m sure plenty of us could do it better). And maybe I’ve been drinking a little to much of the Rashard Lewis Kool-Aid. He’s never been happy in Seattle and I was always under the impression that he would become motivated and propel his game once he skipped town. He keeps telling us that he wants to be the team’s go to guy. As it was pointed out in the comments of our last podcast by Lazlo, ‘Shard has never shown he can be The Man. And, on a side note here - why am I the only one getting the hate from the commenters? Just ’cause ‘Skeets is off making lots of funnies on With Leather, it doesn’t mean he should escape the wrath. Back to Lewis. In a way, withj the Magic, he won’t have to be the guy taking the big shots. Once Howard develops his inside game, Thunder will take the last minute attempts, but once teams start doubling Dwight, it will be up to Lewis to make the big one. Rashard will be 28 in August - it’s his time to peak. […]
