WeTube: Dickey Simpkins, Inspirational Mentor

Dickey Simpkins is best known for leading Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the rest of those pathetic Bulls scrubs to three straight championships during the late 90’s. And if that’s not the truth, than my name is not J.E. Skeets.

Note: This has to be one of the strangest vids I’ve posted yet. It plays like a parody, but I don’t think it is. Odd.

This is the creepiest, funny, dibacle that I’ve witnessed in a while. If we could just get Lawrence Moten & Randolph Childress to do similar videos, my day would be made.

its funny how we have some athletes today making bad decisions and when you get a positive and inspirational message from an athlete who makes a difference in peoples life then the haters come out. Usually the people who can’t do what their hating on. Simpkins is a humble athlete who is sending a good message. Receive and promote it. We always find way to receive and promote garbage in the world. Unbelievable. I think the video is strong.

Whether or not it’s creepy or strange or whatever, the fact is the man is trying to make a differnece in his son’s life. In a world where too many people don’t seem to give a shi_ about their kids, this is admirable. At some point in this life we are going to have to make a decision about whether to continue to promote nonsense or do something a little more difficult like be responsible. Let’s pray for the latter.

Hmmmmm… there seems to be a split on this vid.

I think Dickey is just a righteous guy, preaching some goodness.

  7. Spence at 12:35 am on 08.24.2007

Interesting. If this vid had a tagline at the end with a big corporate logo (i.e.: Nike), there would be a buzz going about how cool this is and how this is a direct antidote for what ails society and organized sports. It would feature a the flavor of the month player saying what the ad guys wrote for them to secure their squeaky clean image with the public. And, there would be a big paycheck in the mail. And, everyone would want to be on the latest bandwagon. There may even be a t-shirt for sale.

Instead, we have a former player - a world champion - who paid his dues trying to change the current mindset and get back to what is important…mentoring, family and the real basics of basketball. Keep it real.

We need more Dickey Simpkins in the world and less haters and posers. Feel the words. Me…I am going to go and spend time with my kid rather than read more swill churned out by shoe companies and posters who have nothing better to do than fire off on a good man.

Hallejuah and pass the ball, Brother.

I agree that this is exactly what the sports world needs right now: a positive, inspirational mentor and a good father and role model.

But come on… Dickey Simpkins?? How can you not find that side-splittingly hilarious? Did you not see the hardcore looks he gives throughout the video or the way he appears to perceive himself as an NBA great?

Now, I love the guy and have always backed him… but seriously? Dickey Simpkins?

    Hilarious.

This is actually genuine. He’s a family man who takes time with his son and daughters. Plus he works with high school athletes. The only problem with this vid is that he’s not a big name player. If he were, this would be followed by a Nike logo.

How could anyone knock this video. Is that what has become of this world? You can’t be a man unless you average over twenty points a game in the NBA? Can you shallow fools look past your nose, and see what the message is here? Dickey can still kick your ass on the court, and raise YOUR kids better than you. Who wins?

  11. Spence at 4:10 pm on 08.24.2007

    Great comment LS.

With this knowledge, everyone take a step back and take a fresh look at this and know that it is real. Dickey regards the high school athletes and young ballers with the same heartfelt respect that he has for his NBA friends like MJ. Not everyone can do that with sincerity.

And, seriously Nikoli…next time you meet Dickey, ask him about his hardcore looks. At 6′10″+, 3x World Champion NBA player…isn’t that hardcore enough for you? It is for me.

And I agree, NIke should take notice. Wake up Nike…go back to the grass roots. What we need is more model athletes…not new shoes to sell with tarnished reputations. With arrests, inuendos and tainted messages, this is what the sports world needs…now.

Again…I am a Simpkins Evangelist. Keep preaching, Dickey.

    Good word Spence.

Hey, wanted to chime in here, I’m the person who created this video. Look, we shouldn’t be arguing here, and maybe if I told you the story on how this video came to be, you would have a little more respect for Dickey Simpkins.

Look, I don’t know basketball at all. I’m a musician/director/editor type of guy. Sports just isn’t my thing. I bought a brand new HD video camera package, and wanted to test it out. I met Dickey through the guy who was designing my web page because Dickey wanted to do a commercial for his basketball training company. I offered to shoot it, and met with Dickey to set up the time and place. My crew started setting up, and during this time I was getting to know Dickey and his son. I was kind of awestruck on how close Dickey was to his son. Dickey and his son had the most amazing father and son bond you could ever imagine. He was constantly injecting wisdom into his son’s head through the whole setup. He was teaching him how to be a gentleman, how to be professional, how to “look a person in the eyes when you shake their hand”, etc. During the shoot, I learned that when Dickey played ball in Europe, he took his son everywhere he went. His son has seen more of the world than any of us could imagine, and he was eight years old.

Within ten minutes, Dickey alone had changed my opinion of the NBA, honestly. My prior negative opinion was formed purely because the media fails to report about the good guys on the court. Without telling Dickey, I started shooting the story I was seeing, and this is what came out. Like I said, I don’t know basketball, but after five hours with this guy, he’s the greatest player that ever played the game in my book.

I have to say, I’m kind of shocked that the general opinion on this board. Do you measure the man by his ability on the court alone? Have any of you had the successes that Mr. Simpkins has experienced? Would any of you, or anyone in the NBA today look like a great player behind Michael, Scottie, Dennis, etc?

Dickey has become a good friend since we first met, and he is one of the most trust-worthy friends I have. Dickey has a strong network of people who respect him, one of them being Michael Jordan, who admires Mr. Simpkins quite a bit.

Now that being said, please watch the video again with an open mind.

  14. RAINMAN at 6:59 am on 08.25.2007

this is what the major sports networks should show over and over…

and not inundate us with michael vick and barry bonds.

dickey simpkins is probably just one of many athletes, but it’s the few bad eggs that get all the press.

  15. Darrell G at 6:15 pm on 08.27.2007

Dickey Simpkins always seemed to be the person doing the little things to help his team win, rebound, pass, play defense….Now when he is doing the biggest thing he could for his team (family) folks want to find the humor in it. There is no humor in the failing rates of are youth, the high rates drug use and teen pregnancies…So why cant we embrass this as a strong message that every, high profile to low profile, parent should listen to, receive and pass on to others (and there kids as well)….I only hope that Im the strong role model my kids & ball players need; so that the models and examples in this crazed world dont influence them…G.R.A.D.D.A I love yall

On one hand, what Dickey Simpkins does is good and virtuous and should be followed by other NBA ballers.

On the other, this is the guy I once heard referred to as “Sickey Dimpkins.” The guy was to basketball talent what Ira Newble is to basketball talent. Yeah, he’s a World Champion(tm), but so are Jud Beuchler and Mark Madsen.

  17. 4 REAL at 9:47 pm on 08.29.2007

Superstar, you started off making since then you showed your true side in the next couple of sentences. The side of a HATER, who probably could never accomplish any kind of status in the NBA. Bottom line the guy achieved playing in the NBA which everybody can’t do and he has Championships that nobody can take away from him. Best of all he is sending a positive message and changing lives. You don’t have to be a “SUPERSTAR” to do that, just a person who cares.

Wow! When you have comments, why not stay positive? Oh, I know why, because you think you are a “SUPERSTAR”!
