YES!

Watching the Nuggets-Mavericks game last night and the announcer yelps out, “JERRY STACKHOUSE!” It was that same raspy voice that’s covered a lot of memorable moments with his excited call as Stack flushed it down. The one and only, Marv Albert. But the play was dead about 3 seconds earlier, when Stack was fouled on the perimeter. Marv = best ever. His enthusiasm, raising his voice at just the perfect moment, his humor and chemistry with his partner(s) were what separated him from the pack.

We’ve talked about it before, but at the age of 66, his losing a step is becoming more evident. When Allen Iverson was fouled and the referees were discussing if it was a shooting foul, Marv had no idea about the reason for the initial whistle or what they were discussing. It’s the little things he’s missing that make the viewer feel clueless. Dan Shulman, the throne is yours.

Marv is still the best in the business, I couldn’t think of any other announcer I would want. Just cause he was confused on a call he is “losing a step?” Every single announcer gets mixed up at one point or another. And even if the Stackhouse play was dead, the dunk was still cool and Marv recognizes that as a fan of the NBA. I think you’re way off base on this one

FINALLY! A story about Marv Albert with no mention of the embarrassing pant…oh, wait.

Definitely agree about Dan Shulman. He could be the best announcer in whatever sport he chose.

Mike Breen is pretty good too.

Big ups to Thornhill, home of the brave. Marv, Shulman and Friedman (just wait, he enunciates like a motherfucker) are the Abraham, Isaac and Jacob of the Jewish announcing world.

I need to listen more. I hope Marv was just “coasting” a bit and his announcer instincts just reacted to seeing a dunk that looked like a real dunk, or maybe he couldn’t hear? Or just got a text from his babysitter wondering where the extra pampers are and was distracted cause his phone’s keypad sticks a little and he was mistyping everything?

You could definately be right; he’s at that age where people get old and stop being useful. I just hope not cause his voice IS basketball.

If he starts wondering where he left his purse on the air (when it’s on his lap, silly Marv) and openly wonders “when did all the Negros start playing basketball?”, then he might need to retire. That’s how we knew it was time for my grandma.

I will pay more attention from now on, but he SHOULD be able to work another 10 years or so. It sure is tough to have a legend fade out live on the air though… get him some gingko.

    Conversation last night:

Tas: Why did we book the Heat… again?!

Skeets: Yeah, I had a feeling that the worst team in the league could beat the Blazers on their home floor.

    Tas: Hmmm

Skeets: Come on, you know that Portland are going to struggle for another couple of years.

Tas: Shhh… we have too many Blazers fans who listen to our podcast.

Skeets: F*ck em… I’m going to put them at the bottom of my power rankings next week.

Tas: Imagine if they do finish near the bottom and get the #1 draft pick next year.

    Skeets: Scary. Hello Dynasty!

Tas: We’d better write another blog so that this “Book It” isn’t at the top of our page any more. Maybe something about Marv Albert.

Skeets: Yeah, can you do it mate, I’ll start cooking up those pork chops before they go off.

OK I’m late to the game on this one, but I actually really like Jeff Van Gundy as a color commentator. He’s got this solid humor that’s completely non-existent when he’s coaching. A great moment during the Pistons/Bulls game last night was when Mike Breen (I think it was Breen) mentioned how Jason Maxiell is really liked by his teammates and they nicknamed him “Max”. Van Gundy’s response: “Wow, they really went deep into the well for that one.” He almost sounded offended by the lack of creativity. I don’t know, it made me laugh.

I was pleasantly surprised when I heard Van Gundy for the 1st time on the mic. His dry humor can really hit the spot. But, I liked him best when he called games with Mark Jackson. JVG would vut up Jackson like no one’s business.
