Ep. 245: Starmen

The Basketball Jones — The Fix — Episode 245 (.mp3)

On today’s show, Tas and I name our NBA All-Star selections — both starters and reserves. Does Wade get selected even though the Heat suck? Which three or four guards represent the loaded West? Who ya got: Camby or Chandler? What about Jose? ‘Toine!? So many questions, so little tambourine shakin’ …

We also discuss the dunk contest’s new voting system, Whoa Boy it up, and fart on our picks. Enjoy!

Amare Stoudemire as your starting All-Star center? At some point bad defense has to start casting a nasty shadow no matter how good your offensive numbers.

39 and 15 given up on the other end to Big Al yesterday

Bogut had 19 and 13 the other night

Al Jefferson gets 27 and 14 on him Jan 18

Kaman with 9 pts and 18 boards in the Suns’ loss to the Clippers Jan 15

29 and 11 to Bogut on Jan 12
and going back in time this season: 19/11 to Chandler, 28/12 to Bynum, 22/20 to Kaman, 36/17 to Duncan, 14/18 to Chandler, 24/13 to Boozer, 32/20 to Jefferson, 30/23 to D12, 31/13 to Yao, etc etc etc

when your man gets 20+ rebounds on you 3 times in less than half the season - boom, no all-star starter consideration. Should be a rule.

I love stats like that…is it wrong to get a hard-on because of it?

  3. CaptainHomeless at 12:43 pm on 01.24.2008

I’m down with any changes to the dunk contest that will help avoid travesties like “the judges decided to give Nate Robinson the win, because he’s short, before the contest even started, regardless of how much better Iguodala was”

Also, neither Kidd nor T-Mac belongs in the All Star Game this year. Neither is an elite player at this point in time (and Kidd’s days as one are probably over).

  4. J.E. Skeets at 12:44 pm on 01.24.2008

Hmmm … perhaps Amare’s inept defense will allow Wade to final win a game this season. That’d be nice.

    Calderon ASG-MVP odds: 800-1? 900-1?

  5. BMatthews at 1:11 pm on 01.24.2008

I’d take those odds after watching the Raps break down the C’s

  6. NDEddieMac at 1:23 pm on 01.24.2008

Wesley “2 scoops” Berry, damn Skeets, wasn’t expecting an old school American Gladiators reference but well done. Also, is it weird for me to say that I may love Ime Udoka? just checking

    I’m pissed I didn’t think of this:

Mike D. in Toronto: Just a thought. Now that Jamario Moon is officially in the dunk contest, wouldn’t it be great if he put in a little twist and jumped over a cow? Then again all the animal rights activists would be up in arms. At least there is no pressure for him. (You get it, Moon jumps over the cow?)

[Doug Smith] asked Jamario about this last night. He’s heard it before and figures if he can find a company with a cow as a symbol or logo, he could make some cake off it, too.

Jason Kidd already has 10 triple doubles this year, 2 less than his career high. just saying

And I will be emailing in my official plea to get Brandon Roy in the AllStar game

  9. J.E. Skeets at 2:10 pm on 01.24.2008

Alan– keep it tight and call it in! I can’t stand hearing our voices for twenty minutes straight.

  10. MattO at 2:43 pm on 01.24.2008

I’m a sucker for a tambourine. And for Skeets singing ‘Tambourine’. Great show.

  11. J.E. Skeets at 2:47 pm on 01.24.2008

The tambourine was actually a last minute back-up. Tas forgot his recorder.

  12. Matt, your friendly Bulls Blogger at 2:59 pm on 01.24.2008

Damn you for shafting Hinrich in ‘whoa boy’. This likely was his only chance, ever.

    p.s.: triple-doubles are overrated.

  13. J.E. Skeets at 3:10 pm on 01.24.2008

I’m a sucker for defense … and seven turnovers.

  14. J23 at 3:12 pm on 01.24.2008

Do you guys broadcast in my Elementary Music Classroom?

Since you had “Casual Encounters with NBAers” last week, how about “David Stern Conspiracies” for your next special series? I heard the “Huskies” were Toronto’s #1 team name choice, but Spielberg paid Stern off very nicely, or it was a favour made for him within the Illuminati club.

  15. ZV at 3:25 pm on 01.24.2008

Words can’t convey how little I was expecting to see Starmen when I logged on, and how pleased I am. If you’re not familiar with cult classic video game Earthbound, you should be.

  16. Martin " at 3:51 pm on 01.24.2008

I loved the 2 Scoops reference. Anyways being uk based I was wondering how both North Americans and Brits would get that reference so I searched him up on the nets and

so apparently he’s now in jail.
Anyways an amazing show and superb singing by Skeets.

  17. Matt Gibson at 7:24 pm on 01.24.2008

    no gangsta gangsta 2, 4, 5 for episode 245?

  18. Raskolnikov at 7:35 pm on 01.24.2008

    Earthbound!!!

  19. Robuka Kenderle at 8:47 pm on 01.24.2008

    >p.s.: triple-doubles are overrated.
I think you are confusing double-double and triple-double.
One TD might be a fluke but 10?
    In half a season?

Overated would be if everyone got them…. like double-doubles.

Name me a stat then that isnt overated then.

  20. Bilal at 9:20 pm on 01.24.2008

    FIASCOOOOOOO!!

  21. Bilal at 9:31 pm on 01.24.2008

Tas’ picks were superior today. Caron AND Jamison both deserve it.

  22. Layton at 10:09 pm on 01.24.2008

All-Star starting five: The Runaway Five. Done and done. (Thank you for the Earthbound memories.)

  23. i hate andrew bogut even though i'm australian and have the same first name at 11:47 pm on 01.24.2008

moon over a cow? i want to see jamario eating mushrooms and getting bigger and jumping on turtles and climbing down pipes…and a green dinosaur.

  24. Saad at 3:41 am on 01.25.2008

    Hehehe bovine humor…

Anyway…no Kaman? Yao’s trailing off? It’s rare I disagree, being the sycophant I am, but I feel I must.

And if JD ever EVER decides to do the ‘hello’ thing again (which we know he won’t), try “Assalam-u-alaikum.” It’d make a Pakistani fan really happy.

  25. ZV at 3:47 am on 01.25.2008

Is the Runaway Five your east or west squad? Cause I bet Dungeon Man has a killer post-up game.

  26. Mike Payne at 3:49 am on 01.25.2008

Tas, I now have a man-crush on you for standing up for Chauncey Billups. He IS the best point guard in the east.

…I tell you though, your boy Calderon is comin’ up.
