Ep. 286: Rookies

The Basketball Jones — The Fix — Episode 286 (.mp3)

On today’s show, Skeets and I discuss this year’s rookie crop, who should win ROY, and college ball versus the pro game. We say also say adios to a team going nowhere, and take a hilarious call about well manicured beards. Enjoy.

Even though today is a Monday I know that everything is going to be alright simply because of today’s sweet picture to go along with “Rookies” and the Mavs are falling out of the playoffs.

Haha, I think every Pacer fan had a mini-heart attack when you said “I’m hearing rumors that Isiah is going to Indiana to coach”

One of the worst shows in recent history, but at least you went with the Tough Juice for Whoa Boy. Get em next time boys.

Possible analogue for Stephen Curry — Ben Gordon

Both are obviously shooting guards that look like point guards. Both are able to get a decent shot the majority of the time. Both are okay distributors who try hard on defense even though their lesser athleticism won’t let them be a major defensive force.

Jerome Williams is the Junkyard Dog, not Jerome James. Jerome James is The Poodle.

@Dave: I’m still high from the concert.

You guys hit some good topics this morning. It’s about time you said goodbye to those sorry Knicks.

Re: the college basketball hype train…just another good reason to gamble and party. I went to a major University, and very few kids are *truly* fans of the hoops team. Outside of the Sweet 16, the skill and effort level (yes, effort) in college basketball is far below that of the NBA.

that picture reminds me of BMatthews after a few too many early morning caesars

    @ Bilal: I think you’re just angry when you’re reminded that I’m not a 40-year old with a V-card.

Either way, we do swing and miss occasionally.

Speaking of the Roots, Black Thought with sunglasses on is a pretty good Baron Davis doppelganger. Amen to the Tamia & Mrs. Curry comments.

    Curry = Rip Hamilton.

I don’t watch a lot of college ball, but his size and the way he runs off screens reminds of rip… who reminds me of reggie.

Tas– you are right on. Horford should definitely be ROY. hands down. conversation over. double double. he has really progressed over the course of the year.

Hey fellas, what’s the theme song for TBJ? It’s always a great start to my morning

Nice call on Rip, Bgraham, especially if Curry keeps getting better on defense. He also looks like he has a soft face.

And everytime I hear that Barry-White-goodbye tune, I keep waiting for the “for your information there’s an inflammation in my tear glands” part.

And while we are on the subject, I also have a complaint about today’s show: promo-girl just did not bring enough sultriness for my liking.

Come on, Caroline. Step it up.

as someone who’s never even set foot inside the north americas, i was always under the impression that outside the ncaa tourney, almost no-one cares about college ball. and once the tournament starts, as ryne said, its all about the gambling and picking your bracket.

and regarding the quality of this years rookie class, draftexpress had an interesting article where they rated them as one of the worst in the last 20 years (at least for the first half of the season):

oh yeah, and the picture was not the best thing to see at 7am when you’re about to start your breakfast.

The NCAA tournament is three weeks of game sevens…of course they play hard. I’ve covered a few games before conference play starts, and they can be just as lazy as the NBA players. However, the lack OVERT money means players tend to play less selfish and are more inclined to buy into a coach (that’s why most ball coaches prefer the college game). Regardless, I think most people just aren’t basketball fans…and that’s what really grates on me: the best sport on the planet is really only in the spotlight for a month of gambling.

Unfortunately, Isiah is not even that good of a drafter: he overruled the Pacers scouts to pick Fred Jones over T. Prince. As an IU alum, I am very very very scared.
