Ep. 295: Phoenix Suns - The Tragedy

The Basketball Jones — The Fix — Episode 295
(.mp3)

In today’s premier playoff show, Skeets and I discuss where the Suns went wrong: Was it coaching? Not enough Shaq? Bad late game play calling? We also examine if the Sixers can win the series, go one-on-one and hear a shawty from you. Enjoy!

Hey Skeets thanks for giving me credit for the opening weekend streak. Just for your information Utah was on the road. Way to make JD swear. And if the Lakers win the championship do they send a ring to Chris Wallace?

  2. Ryne Nelson at 12:19 pm on 04.21.2008

Lou Williams went to high school in Georgia, guys.

  3. Michael at 1:23 pm on 04.21.2008

Guys, I love the show, but Timmy Deuce Can…seriously, just stop it.

Hey guys I’ve been a life long listener to your show, and I have one serious complaint.

Other than you guys generally messing around, I tune in to your show for your basketball insight AND for the outstanding choice of songs J.D selects on a daily basis.

Post the song titles up guys! Is it too much of a hassle? Is it against copyright issues or something that I’m not aware of?

    Besides that, your show rocks.

Totally late on this, but my picks from Friday (that I made while listening to you two bang on about this and that). I think Skeets should probably NOT drink and podcast.

    Hawks/CELTS: Celts in 4
PISTONS/Philly: Detroit in 5 (this is looking bad)
    Wiz/CAVS: Wiz in 7
    Raptors/MAGIC: Magic in 5
    Jazz/ROCKETS: Jazz in 6
    SPURS/Suns: Spurs in 7
HORNETS/Mavs: Mavs in 6 (this would be the one I’d change for sure)
    LAKERS/Nuggets: Lakers in 4

Come on Ryne, we said WILLIE GREEN went to high school in Michigan (thanks to the TNT crew for tidbit). We make plenty of mistakes, I’m sure someone will find something to correct us on in tomorrow’s show.

For the record, I’m pro-Timmy Deuce Can.

Grant Lee Buffalo is just a little older than 2.

An angle that you left untouched about the Suns/Spurs game was when the Suns were up three at the end of the regulation and the first overtime, should they have intentionally fouled? Seems to me after the NCAA’s this year, coach’s would remember to foul in that situation.

I say the Lakers send a ring to Kwame Brown if they win a chip.

How is no one bringing up the idea of fouling the Spurs before even letting Duncan — or anyone else — attempt a 3-pointer?

Someone involved in that game HAD to watch Memphis blow it against Kansas for the same reason. Watch the replay and look at how many Suns are not just inside the 3-point line, but INSIDE THE LANE.

I mean if you can’t learn from someone else’s mistakes…

Fouling before the shot is a gamble that the player you foul is too dumb to pretend he was shooting. It also forces the ref to make a call which is rarely clear-cut. It also leaves open the miracle chance of a hastily flung shot dropping in, leading to a 3 or 4 point play on continuation.

Are all these chance worth taking over believing in your team’s defensive ability?

There was something on espn, maybe truehoop, last week on this very subject.

  13. Craig at 1:28 am on 04.22.2008

Come on now. This is the one of the classic Bill Simmons arguments about fouling when the other team HAS to take a three. In hind sight every team should do it, but few do for a multitude of reasons (bad coaching, risking the “attempted” shot, believing in your team defense, or the fact that the average basketball players don’t play a version of basketball where this thought even enters their conciseness).
    That is all.

Whoa that’s from 2006. It was definitely bumped up recently and featured on espn, or I read something completely different that dealt with the same subject matter, and am not able to find that newer article.

Craig, I’m guessing John Calipari and Mike D’Antoni are somewhere disagreeing with you right now. At the very least, can we agree it was foolish for three of the five Suns on the floor to have at least one foot in the lane?
