Ep. 319: Conspiracy Or Waste Of Time?

The Basketball Jones — The Fix — Episode 319 (.mp3)

On today’s show, Skeets and I discuss the non-call in the final seconds of Lakers-Spurs Game 4: Would you have called a foul? If there’s a plot against the Spurs, why did they shoot more free throws? Is everyone just a little hypersensitive because of the Donaghy saga? We’ll also discuss the basketball game, the issue of alcohol in the NBA and much, much more. Enjoy.

Good show boys. Skeets, I guess I misspoke in my frustration last night, but I was trying to say kind of what you were saying. What I was aiming for is there was obviously contact, but to expect a foul to be called in that situation, especially in the Western Conference Finals, is silly. My main point was that the Spurs had so many other opportunities to get those points earlier in the game that it isn’t worth putting out a hit on Joey Crawford’s head (not that im saying thats a horrible idea either way). Also, I don’t want it to come off like I hate Brent, he had a hell of a game and has done some great work over the last few years, I just dont like him being your last option. Also a question for you guys, cause it’s bugging the hell out of me. Especially since Horry quit looking for shots like yall said, yah he plays solid D, but why is Kurt Thomas not getting minutes anymore? He’s played well when in (at least from my selective memory) does he have some injury we just arent hearing about or what? Thanks guys, have a good one

Funny quote from Okur about the last round:

Question: During the season as a team you committed the most fouls. You are known as a tough team. Did you pay for this during the Lakers series? There was a big difference in free throw shot, even on your home court except for one game always in favor of the Lakers?

Memo:I don’t know if we committed the most fouls, as I am not a big stat guy. However I know that we were also one of the most often fouled teams in the league. For some reason our games are usually played that way. But when I look at the Lakers series, they were the ones going to shoot the freebies in general. So during the season we fouled a lot, and got fouled a lot, but in the playoffs we continue to foul a lot, while all of a sudden the opponents start playing nice and clean? There were times during the Lakers series I felt like I was a porter as there was always someone on my back. We played as we always do. I am sure that since they say playoffs are usually tougher and refs let teams play more, the opposition played at least as rough and tough as the regular season.

Thing is… that was definitely a foul on the floor, and I think it should have been called. Weak D by Fish there.

When I first read the Noah story it was reported he had one joint in a cigarette pack, not a dimebag like Tas is saying. I dunno which one is right, but what’s bugging me, above that and the alcohol you guys are focusing on, is the cigarette pack!! WTF is that? Why on Earth would you be a professional athlete and smoke that shyte? Is there something about smokes that increases performance that I know nothing about? Weird if you ask me, but for all I know the entire L is a bunch of chain smokers and it’s all good.

Skeets put the bong down, let the dream go. Carmelo is just a marketing cash cow for the L.. that e-mail was right on point, IMO. And the T-Mac comparison is great…. Melo needs only 2 more 1st round exits to match T-Mac. Wooohhhhboyyyy!! Learn leadership, wtf? Are you lacing your shit with some crushed up E too or what?

You guys are spot on in re. to the officiating.
Push the conspiracy theories aside. The fact the Joey Crawford was officiating that game is wrong in itself.
It seems sometimes that Stern is running a day-time soap as opposed to a pro. league. Why even leave room for speculation… Let Crawford ref the east finals, I don’t think the league has a shortage of refs does it?

Spurs fell victim to the same game1 heartbreaker effects that Suns fell victim to vs. Spurs.

I think the NBA has a social responsibility to look out for the overall health of its players, just like any other company. Tas, i think that your view as long as they play well on the court is messed up. That thinking is what got Portland the Jail Blazers moniker. If you need more evidence, read this article:

NBA players aren’t just athletes, they are people too.

Regarding learning leadership, I’m with Skeets. Look at our hometown boy Chris Bosh, he came into the league as a shy kid but over time became more vocal and took on more responsibility. Its possible for a player to learn leadership, but I do think that he has to have a pretty good character to begin with, which is questionable in the case of Melo.

    “he’s setting an example.”

I.e. is used to clarify a preceding statement. E.g. is used when giving examples. Tas, you’re better than that!

I’m curious, if the NBA basketball is the most difficult game to ref, why don’t they have more officials?

They should have 4 refs on the floor plus one “in the booth” that is wired to the others, giving 5+ angles of live view. The one in the booth doesn’t need replay, he/she can just see all of the different angles that TV cameras have and potentially alert the other officials to ongoing infractions (”Player X is constantly sitting in the pain for defensive 3-seconds.” or “Player Y is slapping at the ball and hitting face RIGHT NOW”).

On the fly adjustments made by an officiating crew getting new/better information from one on their own team. What a novel concept!

as a spurs fan myself can i just say, any spurs fan blaming that non-call for the loss should SHUT THE FUCK UP. thats not why we lost.

and there are a lot of spurs fans who have been quietly hoping horry would just disappear permanently. guy has been a dead weight all year, and popovich is so infatuated with “veteran experience” that he won’t leave horry on the bench.

Who DIDNT enjoy the irony of last night?
It felt almost like a cheesy My Name is Earl episode.
I wonder if a reporter had the balls to ask Popovic if karma was to blame for the loss?

Nice to see the war on drugs has trained sheeple well. Noah is an issue only with the little goose steppers who’d piss in a fucking cup so they can sling shit at Mickey D’s.

@Charles: Considering he got to witness Princess Wince Carter doggin’ it at his absolute worst, Bosh turned out better than I thought he would.
