The People’s Playoff Book It: Baron – Day 1.5

Playoff time! The Basketball Jones is giving away a pair of Adidas basketball shoes to the person who can put together the longest streak of picks during the postseason. If you’d like to give it a shot, email us. Once a wrong pick is made, we’ll email the next contestant. The best streak, shared by three, is three! Baron starts his run… a 2nd time because of a push:

Boston [+5.5] over DETROIT (home team in CAPS)

David Stern pulls some strings.

Ok, I guess NOW we can call it as it really is, not how media flavoured perception tints reality.

Detroit doesnt play rough or tough, doesnt give consistent effort or even show up for quarters and often games, they are not great in clutch situations, nor do they always come through.
The Pistons also have no consistent interior scoring.
Antonio McDyess is physically worn out to be effective in the post anymore and is really a part time player.
Rasheed on the other hand is just reluctant to stay in the post. He has the Sam Perkins disease.
(Im surprised he and Garnett even know where the key is) This is NOT the 2004 Pistons even though some players are still the same.

Rasheed went from being a talented but troubled forward to somehow being touted as one of the best. Perception.
In reality, his game has deteriorated as has in effort and effectiveness while his mouth is still running at double time. The latter covers up for the other flaws. He is NOT in the top 10 power forwards in the league. What you are left with is two skinny guys and a good PG who will be 32 this summer.

They will still be the same team next year, most likely even win 50 (this is the east we are talkin about) but they are still on the downwards part of the hill. They will have 2 maybe 3 more years of late round picks but short of a great trade, little in terms of impact players. And as much as I love the team concept, they are missing a franchise player.

You can delude yourself that this team can still win it all but it is nowhere near the efficient team of 2004 (just like the Suns kept getting worse every year, losing important players and bench and were never the team with Johnson). They look almost the same on paper but that’s fool’s gold. And in the east, that fake stuff sounds even more tempting.
