The People’s Tiebreak: Pair Of Shoes On The Line

The Basketball Jones is giving away a pair of Adidas basketball shoes to the person with the longest streak of picks during the postseason. Since we have a 3-way tie at 3, we’ve got a tiebreaker going on. Each contestant will pick the winner of each game, and guess how many points they’ll win by. The difference of points between the pick and the actual score will be added up after each game, over the course of the series. The person with the smallest number will win the shoes. Finally, a couple picks for Boston. Will it end tonight?

    wow Sports Tsar within the all-or-nothing pick.

    This goes against pretty much all game theory conventions.

    I feel like logically, Sport Tsar’s pick should belong to Hawkboy, Hawkboy’s should have been C-squared’s, and C-squared’s should have been Sports Tsar’s.

    Good point Loren.

    Hawkboy can’t win and can only live to see another game if the Lakers win. Even then, he won’t be in good shape.

    This reminds me of Ken Jennings with the pointless final Jeopardy! where he had the game already won.

    Wow, I didn’t even realize that Hawkboy would still lose even if he got it exactly right.

    Basically, for those who aren’t following, the idea is this. The leader should be more conservative with his pick to minimize the possible ground to be made up with a single game.

    This means that Sports Tsar should have picked as close to what he thought C-Squared was going to pick as possible.

    If C-Squared picks the Celts by 1, and Sports Tsar picks the Celtics by 2, then the most possible points that C-Squared can make up is 1.

    On the other hand, by making this pick, not only does he not guarantee a win, but if the Celtics win, Sports Tsar is (to Tas’ dismay) going to end up in 3rd place.

    I guess someone didn’t need new shoes after all.

    or there was an error in the scoring.

    my actual picks were:

    game 4 - lakers by 4
    game 5 - lakers by 8

    for whatever reason, my game 4 pick was cast as my game 5 pick as well. hmmm…

    necessary scoring adjustments and lack of knowledge of other competitors picks aside, i would have taken boston by 4 in game 6 today

    in tas’ hands i guess - whatever will be will be though
